Our
Process
Our lumber comes from trees that are sustainably grown on Anderson Hollow Farms . This 850-acre farm at the head of Anderson Hollow about 50 miles southwest of Nashville Tennessee has been operated for five generations of the Anderson family. Originally hand saws and mules were used to cut and move the logs, but now we have progressed to an efficient bandsaw mill with tractors and skidders to get the job done, but there‘s still a lot of hard work required.
Walnut, Oak, Ash, Cedar, and other species are brought out of the woods when fully mature. We then mill them into a wide variety of wood products such as live edge slabs, posts, beams, and dimensional lumber on our WoodMizer LT40 hydraulic bandsaw mill. We can cut widths up to 34” wide and 21 feet long in almost any thickness desired.
Once milled we typically stack the hardwood lumber in covered stacks to air dry for one to two years to reduce the moisture content slowly. Cedar is unique since it doesn’t require extended drying periods and can be used immediately after milling. For oak and walnut hardwoods after the initial air drying is complete we move the lumber into the solar-powered kiln to achieve even lower moisture content lumber for use by woodworkers, furniture makers, architects, and interior designers. Once the solar kiln drying process is completed in a couple of months depending on seasonal weather, we move the dried lumber to dry storage for sale to our valued customers.
For those who need a more finished product than a bandsawn surface, we offer additional planing and jointing processes resulting in a flat, smooth finish that shows the beauty of the natural wood grain of each unique piece.
As you can tell, our process may not be the most rapid out there, but we believe that it results in the best wood products for your needs.
