All the products we sell were harvested and milled on our 850 acre family farm located at the head of a hollow near Liberty, Tennessee just 50 miles southeast of Nashville. The farm has been in the Anderson family since our great grandfather’s family settled there from North Carolina in 1847. The farm’s soil is excellent for Tennessee hardwood tree growth and has an abundance of old growth walnut, oak, cedar, poplar and ash trees.
We have a Wood Mizer LT40 sawmill that we use to custom cut the logs into slabs, lumber, beams and posts. The milled lumber is then dried in air-dry stacks for over 18 months. Some lumber is moved to the solar drying kiln for those who need lumber with low moisture content.

We offer lumber from the trees that grow on our family farm. These include red oak, walnut, and eastern red cedar. In the future we will have cherry, poplar, and hickory in limited quantities. Contact us if these species interest you so we can start milling some up for your need

Custom milling is one of our specialties. Just contact us with your specifications and we’ll do our best to mill some up for you. We don’t always have logs ready for milling but we’ll let you know the expected lead time for each custom order.

Eastern Red Cedar lumber is a softwood known for its distinctive reddish color, aromatic scent, and natural resistance to decay and insects. This cedar is excellent for use in outdoor products such as fences, posts and outdoor furniture due to its natural weather-resistant properties.
It also works great for indoor projects such as closets, chests, drawers and storage areas because of its aromatic qualities which repel insects, especially moths. Cedar is also an excellent wood to use in craft and decorative items such as birdhouses, planters, and small wooden items that benefit from its attractive appearance and pleasant scent.

Green wood, or undried wood, is freshly harvested and contains high moisture content, often over 30%. It's softer and easier to work with, making it ideal for woodturning and green woodworking. It's also readily available and less expensive. However, green wood shrinks and warps as it dries, leading to distortion and instability. It can also promote mold growth and decay, and its heavier weight makes it harder to handle and transport.
Air-dried wood is stacked and left to dry naturally in the open air or under cover for several months to a few years. This method is cost-effective and environmentally friendly, with minimal equipment needed. It also results in fewer defects like stress and checking. However, air drying is slow, weather-dependent, and may not achieve as low a moisture content as kiln drying, making it less suitable for projects requiring highly stable wood.
Solar kiln-dried wood uses solar energy to speed up the drying process, combining elements of air drying and kiln drying. It's energy-efficient, reducing costs and environmental impact. The process is faster than air drying and results in fewer defects.
Standard kiln-dried wood is dried in a controlled environment using heat, ventilation, and humidity control, significantly reducing drying time to a few days or weeks. It achieves a consistent moisture content, ideal for indoor furniture and precision woodworking, and kills pests and fungi. However, it's energy-intensive, leading to higher costs and potential defects like internal stresses and warping if not controlled. The higher energy consumption also results in a larger carbon footprint. Anderson Hollow farms does not offer standard kiln-dried wood for these reasons.

Woodworkers often prefer solar kiln-dried wood over standard kiln-dried wood due to its superior quality. The gentle and controlled drying process of solar kilns reduces the risk of internal stresses, checking, and warping, resulting in fewer defects. Additionally, this method helps preserve the wood's natural color and grain patterns, maintaining its aesthetic appeal. This combination of higher quality, fewer defects, and the preservation of natural characteristics makes solar kiln-dried wood a favored choice for creating beautiful, stable, and durable wood products.

Anderson Hollow Farms lumber, slabs, beams and posts are rough sawn using a large band sawmill that leaves an unfinished surface. This is a cost-effective way to purchase lumber for your needs without paying for additional machining.
Anderson Hollow Farms can supply S2S (surfaced two sides), and S4S (surfaced four sides) upon request. S2S lumber is planed on two sides, providing a smoother top and bottom while leaving the edges rough, making it excellent for general woodworking projects and furniture where edges will be further machined. S4S lumber is planed smooth on all four sides, offering a uniform and ready-to-use finish, perfect for high-end furniture making, trim, and projects requiring precise dimensions and smooth surfaces. If you need this type of lumber, please contact us for pricing and availability.
